About Us

Founded by Stephanie Shochat-Gruss, a counsellor, therapist and artist, Expressive Arts Space offers Counselling and Expressive Arts Therapy to individuals, children, youth, seniors and families. While working with you, or your child, Stephanie holds a warm and nurturing space to explore our inner ability to find connectivity through various textures, art forms, and body flow. Using outer senses to bring out inner playfulness, natural joy, and evoke a creative flow that can open new levels of communication that go beyond words.

Our counselling and Expressive Arts therapy sessions are available online and in person. We also host various interactive workshops, presentations, and community events within the Barrhead, Westlock, Whitecourt and Edmonton area.

For over 20 years Stephanie has worked with the transformative power of art engagement and healing, helping people from all walks of life initiate change and discover new ways of communication and being.

As an expressive arts counsellor and therapist, Stephanie is particularly passionate working with children  and youth, especially special needs and autism. Over the past 10 years, she has supported as an educational assistant (EA) many children with challenges in communication, behaviours, social skills and mental health in classrooms and adults in community settings from many different cultures and demographics. Her Master’s Thesis, “Encounter on the Rainbow Bridge” illustrates how Early Childhood Educators can use Expressive Arts in response to children diagnosed with autism – supporting language, social, and functional skills and facilitating shifts in behavior.

Her background as a multi-media artist and Feng Shui consultant add to her unique ability to understand the movement of energy in the body and the space. She found that the arts give access in the sessions to the subconscious, shifting held beliefs and patterns in a nurturing way, and as well as open up reflection and insight of what’s felt inside. Once clear and acknowledged, it will transform what and how we do things on the outside.

Creating a warm and joyful space for her clients, Stephanie uses her intuitive, innovative and practical sense to provide resources that help people deal with even the most complex challenges. Working from a clear belief that we can find nurture in the midst of anything, she continues to help people regain balance in their lives and find the spark of creativity that can ignite an endless stream of possibilities.

"Helping seniors remain productive and creative is very positive. Stephanie worked with my mother in her later years living in a nursing home. They painted and crafted. Stephanie is a fine artist in her own right. They did a huge wall mural involving residents in helping to create a fun atmosphere in the lodge. Stephanie was patient, kind and always had a great way to help my mother express her creativity. She was a great help to our family in keeping our mom happy."

"Our house feels lighter and less cluttered. We feel more relaxed and content after our sessions with Stephanie. Others commented on how nice it felt. After applying the suggestions for placing desks, bed, organize our downtime spaces, ‘do’ our ‘hobbies’, we both felt met by our ‘new space’. It’s fascinating and really helpful. You’ll discover things about yourself and your home helping transform your experience of your space. No need to spend lots of money either!"

"Our house felt like we just moved in, it wasn’t tailored to our needs. After implementing Stephanie’s Feng Shui suggestions of moving my husband’s office up from the basement to the abundance and the fish tank to the career area of the house, he got a raise, an inheritance and more daily benefits. In the upper level he is more part of the family. We sleep better. Our son is going to bed easier, more comfortable in his study room, feeling stronger. I started yoga, having a space for it. I like working looking out a window, not backing towards upcoming stairs."

Twice Stephanie did a Feng Shui Consultation for me. Amazing! The 2nd one online Germany/Canada was as good and precise as the 1st one on site. By her intuition, incredible Feng Shui knowledge and application of Interior design, she reads the needs of the people and the place finding the right solutions. I can totally trust her. With her help my small garden became the greatest jewel: so peaceful and colourful, that a friend said: “Wow, a little Zen Garden.”
